PETALING JAYA: The Kelantan FA (Kafa) have appointed Datuk M. Karathu (pic) as their new coach.
The 62-year-old veteran, who had coached the Sri Lanka national team and led his home team Perak to the inaugural FA Cup title in 1990, has come to the rescue of the east coast side following the six-month suspension of B. Sathianathan.
Kelantan’s preparation for the season opening Charity Shield game against Selangor at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday, which also counts as a Super League fixture, was thrown into chaos on Monday when the FA of Malaysia’s (FAM) appeals committee upheld the disciplinary board’s decision to suspend Sathianathan for six months with immediate effect.
The disciplinary board meted out the punishment on Sathianathan for touching on FAM policy matters in the media.
Sathianathan, who led Kelantan to their historic Malaysia Cup victory last year, cannot be involved in any FAM activities until July 24.
Kafa president Tan Sri Annuar Musa announced Karathu’s appointment during a TV sports talk show last night.
Team manager Azman Ibrahim said Karathu would be in Kota Baru today.
“Karathu is no stranger to Kelantan fans, having led the Red Warriors to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup in 1993,” said Azman.
Karathu, whose last coaching job was with Perak two years ago, had also had stints with Negri Sembilan and Woodlands Wellington FC Singapore.
