CATANIA, Sicily (AP) - Former Argentina midfielder Diego Simeone has been appointed coach of Catania.
The Sicilian club says that Simeone has signed a contract through June 2012, with the move coming a day after Marco Giampaolo left by mutual agreement.
Catania won just one of its last seven matches under Giampaolo and is 15th in the 20-team Serie A, three points above the relegation zone.
The 40-year-old Simeone has already coached Racing Avellaneda, Estudiantes, River Plate and San Lorenzo in Argentina.
He formerly played in Serie A with Inter Milan and Lazio, although this is his first coaching job in Italy.
