BERLIN: Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben admitted on Saturday that Borussia Dortmund may be uncatchable at the top of the Bundesliga and virtually conceded the title to the runaway leaders.
With half of the German League season already gone, Dortmund have a 13-point lead while defending champions Bayern are 16 points off the pace in fifth spot.
“You can already congratulate Dortmund on winning the title. There’s no point talking about first place any more, as several of us have already said,” said Robben.
“Obviously, there’s always hope while it’s still theoretically possible, but we’re just too far behind. You have to accept and also respect that.
“It’s simply a superb achievement by Dortmund, and they’re to be congratulated on that.”
Robben made his first appearance since the World Cup final in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg when he came off the bench for injured French midfielder Franck Ribery.
Bayern coach Louis van Gaal refused to give up on his team’s pursuit of Dortmund.
“Everything is still possible, but we are focusing on second place for the moment,” he said.
“We’ve made up a point in that respect. That’s not bad, but it’s not really good either.”
On Saturday, Robben made his first club appearance since last season’s Champions League final defeat to Inter Milan after recovering from a thigh injury.
Germany star Thomas Mueller gave Bayern the lead against Wolfsburg before Sascha Riether grabbed the equaliser.
