Cardiff move up to third thanks to Bellamy’s wonder goal

SWANSEA: Craig Bellamy’s superb goal five minutes from time saw Cardiff to a 1-0 win away to Swansea on Sunday that lifted them above their Welsh rivals and into third place in the Division Two table.
Victory at the Liberty Stadium left David Jones’ men just a point behind Nottingham Forest in the battle for the second automatic promotion place to the English Premier League behind runaway leaders QPR.
Much-travelled former Wales captain Bellamy, now with his hometown club, grabbed all three points for the visitors when the striker’s curling shot from some 25 yards beat Swansea keeper Dorus de Vries and went in off the post.
“Derbies just seem to go that way for me, probably in overall play I didn’t deserve it,” Bellamy told the BBC.
“That’s twice their right-back has played me out the game but no-one will remember that performance, they will remember the goal and that win.”
Cardiff’s victory was their first on Swansea soil since 1997 and denied their south Wales rivals what would have been the first season double by either side in the 82-year history of the match.
“It’s going to happen one year, we’re both on the up and it will only be a matter of time before one of the clubs does the double,” Bellamy said.
“I’ve always wanted to play in this derby and to get a goal, get a winner, my play probably didn’t deserve it, but I will take it all day long.”
Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers added: “I thought it was the old cliched game of two halves – Cardiff were better in the first but as the game went on I thought we were going to get the goal.
“But then, from nothing, Craig Bellamy’s hit that wonderful strike. I feel for the players and the supporters.”
