LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — Standard Liege midfielder Mehdi Carcela has ended weeks of indecision by opting to play international football for Morocco instead of Belgium.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport says Carcela has dropped his appeal against FIFA's decision in December that let him switch his eligibility to Morocco.
Days after FIFA granted his request, Carcela changed his mind and asked CAS to let him keep his options open.
The court says Carcela now wants to play for Morocco.
The 21-year-old Carcela was born in Liege and played for Belgium at age group level while also holding Moroccan and Spanish citizenship.
FIFA rules allow players to switch nationality once before they play a senior competitive international match.
