Simeone is new Catania coach

ROME: Catania yesterday named former Argentina hard-man Diego Simeone as their new coach a day after parting company with Marco Giampaolo.
The 40-year-old Simeone is perhaps best known for his tangle with David Beckham at the 1998 World Cup in France.
Simeone played for Inter Milan at the time and later moved on to Lazio before retiring from his playing career in 2006.
Having ended his playing days at Racing Club, he immediately took over the team’s coaching reins.
He moved on to Estudiantes and won the Apertura title at the end of the year. A year later he left the club and joined River Plate, taking them to the Clausura title in 2008. A few months later he resigned with his team bottom of the table.
A 12-month spell at San Lorenzo followed and Simeone had been out of work since last April.
Catania are 15th in Serie A – three points above the drop zone.
