KUALA LUMPUR: Winger S. Kunalan did not have a goal to show in Malaysia’s successful run in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) last month.
And the 24-year-old Negri Sembilan player hopes to end his goal drought in the Super League, which begins on Jan 29.
Kunalan said that he was happy to help Malaysia win the Suzuki Cup but was disappointed that he did not get his name on the score sheets.
The last time he scored a goal for Malaysia was in the 2009 Laos SEA Games – against Cambodia.
Kunalan, who will be featuring for the fourth consecutive season for Negri Sembilan in the Super League, said that expectations would be high on him to deliver goals for the Deer.
“I scored five goals last year and this season, coach Wan Jamak (Wan Hassan) will certainly expect more from me. It will be a big challenge for me,” he said.
Negri have roped in seven players to further strengthen their team for the challenges in the Super League. They are Hairuddin Omar (Kelantan), Irwan Fadly Idrus, Norhafiz Zamani Misbah (KL Plus), Mohd Farizal Marlias, Ahmad Fakri Saarani (Perlis), G. Mahathevan (PKNS) and Ahmad Aminuddin (Harimau Muda).
Negri did well to win the FA Cup last season. They also made it to the Malaysia Cup final and were beaten 1-3 by Kelantan. In the Super League, Negri finished eighth.
“We have a solid team and we will go all out to win the treble (Super League, FA Cup and Malaysia Cup) this season,” said Kunalan, who received a trophy and RM500 from Astivaaram Foundation Sports Excellence Achievement Awards yesterday for his role to help Malaysia win the AFF tournament title for the first time.
Kunalan thanked the foundation for giving awards and cash to futher motivate Malaysian Indian athletes to do well in sports.
