Malaysia up two spots in world rankings after Suzuki Cup win

KUALA LUMPUR: The national team’s success in the AFF Suzuki Cup last month saw Malaysia move up two places in the FIFA world rankings list from 144 to 142.
The new rankings list, released by FIFA, saw Malaysia gain 17 points but their new position is nowhere near the 75th position they occupied in 1993.
Despite the much-hyped success, Malaysia’s position was no better than that of countries like Burundi (141), Tajikistan (143), India (144) and Hong Kong (146) – all countries which lack facilities and infrastructure compared with Malaysia.
Among Asean countries, Malaysia are in fifth position – behind Thailand (119), Indonesia (126), Vietnam (136) and Singapore (139). In Asia, Malaysia are 23rd from 46 countries on the list.
Meanwhile, world and European champions Spain remained at the top of the 203 countries listed on the list, followed by Holland in second and Germany third.
