PETALING JAYA: The success of the national team in the recent Suzuki Cup Asean Football Federation (AFF) Championships is set to raise the image of the Malaysian Super League (MSL) for the new season.
The affiliates are set to benefit with a bigger grant following the FA of Malaysia’s (FAM) tie-up with a new sponsor. The FAM will reveal the name of the sponsor after their exco meeting at the Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya today.
It is learnt that the new title sponsor will replace Telekom Malaysia (TM), whose two-term deal (2002-2010) with the FAM ends on Jan 26. TM contributed about RM9mil per year.
The affiliates of the FAM used to get an annual subsidy between RM1mil-RM1.5mil when Dunhill were the title sponsors in the 1990s.
However, the ban on cigarette companies in sports in 2000 left FAM without a strong partner. Since the withdrawal of Dunhill, the teams were each given a meagre RM200,000-RM300,000 subsidy per season. The new season will kick off with the Charity Shield match between Selangor and Kelantan on Jan 29.
