Cahill rallying for flood victims

EVERTON star Tim Cahill (pic) has dedicated his two-goal performance against India at the Asian Cup to the flood victims back home in Queensland as he looks at ways to help the devastated region.
Cahill scored the first and final goals in Australia’s 4-0 win in Doha on Monday.
He is well known for his trademark celebration of punching the corner flag after scoring but this time he also mimicked a phone call.
The attacking midfielder said the symbol was to show his compassion and highlight a prize he was offering in a charity drive to help raise money for families affected by the floods.
“I’ve donated a prize where two people get to bid for a chance to sit in my box personally from anywhere in the world and watch an Everton game, have some dinner, watch a training session, have a signed pair of boots and a jersey,” he said.
“It’s something that I thought up with some of the media I was working with to do something special for the cause. I showed the gesture because I want people to call in on the telethon, donate money and bid on my auction.
“This is football but there’s a lot more that’s going on in the world, and to help people and families that are struggling is my way of showing that I care.”
Socceroos players have also put a signed jersey on eBay to raise money for the flood appeal.
Flash floods have killed nine and left 66 missing in Queensland, with the city of Brisbane bracing itself for disaster yesterday.
Queensland state premier Anna Bligh has said the toll would rise “potentially quite dramatically“, with families among those missing and rescue efforts hampered by heavy rain and washed-away roads.
