LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Benfica downed Leiria 3-0 on Sunday to stay within eight points of Portuguese leader FC Porto.
Javier Saviola opened the scoring for Benfica in the 27th minute before setting up Nicolas Gaitan in the 81st-minute for a 2-0 lead at Magalhaes Pessoa stadium. Oscar Cardozo was well placed in the 90th minute to score the last.
Benfica maintained its five-point advantage over third-place Sporting Lisbon Porto finished the first half of the season unbeaten following Saturday's 4-1 win over Maritimo.
Leiria remained fourth in the standings.
