Alan Smith out for rest of the season

NEWCASTLE: Newcastle boss Alan Pardew revealed on Thursday that injury hit midfielder Alan Smith is likely to miss the rest of the season following a flare-up of an old ankle injury.
Smith, 30, suffered a knock in last weekend’s derby draw against Sunderland and underwent a scan on Wednesday which revealed the complaint was linked to a previous ankle injury.
“It’s sad news for Alan because it’s an ankle he’s had problems with and we think he’ll probably be out for the rest of the season,” Pardew said. “Because he’s had a dislocation and a break on that ankle before, when you get a heavy blow like he did it’s a very low recovery rate.”
Pardew also revealed that he would be without Andy Carroll for another three weeks, ruling him out of today’s match against Tottenham at St James’ Park.
